So I was talking to someone the other day on Omona and they mentioned that Baek Jiyong is an idol. I was really surprised at that because I thought she was a ballad singer, the first thing I heard from her having been 'Like Being Shot By A Bullet', so it got me wondering about just which artists are qualified as idols.

I mean, idol groups are obvious but what about artists like Lyn, Wheesung, Fly to the Sky, Davichi, 8Eight, Younha and Park Hyo Shin? Are any of them considered idols and if so, why? What qualifies you as an idol - is it making a certain genre of music or having a particular kind of image? Can ballad singers be idols like 2AM? And can you start off as an idol and then become a 'regular singer' like Shin HyeSung who started out in Shinhwa but now has a solo career as a ballad singer? Is he no longer considered an idol?

I'm really curious now.
